Elastomer blends

Soft blends dominate the cheaper end of the category. They feel remarkable in the shop and behave badly over time, for reasons that are entirely physical.

TPE and TPR are families of thermoplastic elastomer: plastics that behave like rubber but can be melted and moulded like a plastic. They are inexpensive, they can be made extremely soft, and they can be given a skin-like surface that silicone struggles to match. Those are real advantages, and they explain why the material keeps appearing.

Why the surface is not a surface

Under magnification, a blend surface is not smooth. It is an open structure with channels running below the visible layer. Fluid enters those channels by capillary action. Soap and water clean the outer layer and reach very little of what is inside. Warm, moist and undisturbed, the interior becomes a place where bacteria and fungi grow without competition.

The visible signs arrive in order. First a faint smell that appears a day after cleaning rather than immediately. Then a change in surface feel, slightly tacky where it used to be dry. Then discolouration, usually a yellow or grey cast that no cleaning reverses. At that point the object is finished, whatever its condition otherwise.

A blend object has a service life measured in months. That is not a defect. It is the material behaving exactly as it must.

Oil, plasticiser and bleed

Softness in a blend usually comes from mineral oil held inside the polymer network. Over time that oil migrates to the surface, which is the greasy film that appears on a blend object left in a drawer. Oil bleed also explains why two blend objects stored touching each other can fuse together into a single sticky mass, and why some blends attack the finish of anything they are stored against.

Using a blend sensibly

If a blend object is already in the drawer, three habits extend its usable life. Use a condom over it, which turns a porous surface into a disposable barrier. Wash with mild soap immediately after use rather than later. Dry it completely before storage, since the moisture left inside is the fuel for everything that follows.

Replacement rather than restoration is the honest answer once a smell has established itself. Anyone replacing a blend object with a non porous one usually notices the difference within a week, mostly because cleaning stops being a losing argument. How to recognise one

  • A sweet, vanilla or faintly chemical smell out of the box.
  • A surface that grips dust immediately and keeps it after rinsing.
  • Extreme softness combined with a very low shelf position on material description.
  • Wording such as skin-like, cyberskin, ultra realistic or jelly, none of which are polymers.

None of these is a moral failing on the part of the object. A blend is a reasonable material for a short lived novelty and a poor one for anything intended to last. The problem is only that the two are sold side by side, at a glance indistinguishable, and the difference does not appear until months later.
