Buying
Most regret in this category comes from choosing on appearance and discovering the material, the size or the noise afterwards.
There is a sensible order to the decision, and it is almost the reverse of the order a product photograph suggests. Material comes first, because it cannot be changed and it decides cleaning and lifespan. Mechanism comes second, because it decides how the thing actually feels. Size comes third. Appearance comes last, and by then it usually does not matter.
The order
- Material: non porous or not, and which family.
- Mechanism: rumble, buzz, pressure wave, or nothing at all.
- Dimensions: insertable length and maximum diameter, in millimetres.
- Sealing: fully waterproof, splash resistant, or neither.
- Controls: reachable in use, and whether the lowest setting is genuinely low.
- Support: warranty length, and who handles a claim.
- A first purchase narrows the field for anyone starting from nothing.
- Sizes and shapes turns adjectives into measurements.
- Waterproof ratings explains what the rating codes actually promise.
- Counterfeits covers copies, which are common and usually made of the wrong material.
- Discretion deals with packaging, billing and delivery.
Where to buy matters as much as what
A specialist retailer stocks from named manufacturers, publishes material and dimensions, handles warranty claims and packs discreetly. A general marketplace lists whatever a third party uploaded, with photographs that may belong to a different product entirely. The difference shows up when something is wrong, which is the moment the difference is expensive.
European buyers have the additional advantage of consumer law that applies to distance selling, and of shorter shipping. A shop such as inWonderstate publishes material, dimensions and delivery terms on the product page itself, which is the minimum standard worth insisting on.
Returns are limited, and that is normal
Hygiene rules mean most intimate products cannot be returned once the seal is broken, which is reasonable and worth planning around. Faulty goods are a different matter and remain covered by statutory rights in most of Europe regardless of the hygiene rule. Keeping the box and the order confirmation makes that claim straightforward.
The seal on the box is the last moment at which a decision can be reversed. Everything before it deserves the attention.
Budget, honestly
The cheapest end of this market is dominated by porous blends with small motors, and the difference in outlay between that and a non porous object with a decent motor is recovered within a year simply because the second one is still working. Beyond a certain point the extra buys design, application control and packaging rather than anything the body notices.
Sales are real in this category, particularly around the ordinary retail calendar, and a specialist shop discounting last year's model is a genuine opportunity rather than a trick. A marketplace listing that undercuts every specialist by a wide margin on a current model is a different situation, covered on the counterfeits page.
