Power

Strength is the most advertised property in this category and the least well defined. Underneath the adjectives there are only three or four mechanisms.

Every vibrating object works by moving a mass rapidly and transmitting that movement to a surface. How the mass is moved decides almost everything about how the result feels. Two objects rated at the same number of settings can produce completely different sensations, because the mechanism differs and the marketing does not mention it.

The three mechanisms

An eccentric rotating mass spins an off centre weight on a motor shaft. It is cheap, reliable and produces a broad, high frequency sensation usually described as buzzy. A linear resonant actuator drives a weight back and forth along one axis at a tuned frequency. It is more expensive, uses less energy for the same felt intensity, and produces the deeper sensation described as rumbly. Air pulse devices move air rather than the object itself, producing pressure waves against tissue instead of vibration through it.

Why settings counts mislead

A listing that advertises twenty settings usually has three intensities and a number of patterns. Patterns are pulses, waves and escalations that vary intensity over time. They are a preference rather than a feature, and many people use one setting and ignore the rest. What matters far more is the range: how gentle the lowest setting is, and whether the highest is genuinely stronger or simply faster.

A wide range at the quiet end is more useful than a headline number at the loud end, and it is almost never advertised.

Contact changes the result

Vibration felt in the hand and vibration felt against soft tissue are different measurements. Soft tissue loads the motor, damping the amplitude and lowering the effective frequency. A small motor that seems impressive held in the air can disappear under pressure, while a heavier motor with more torque keeps its character. This is the single largest reason for the gap between an in-shop impression and a week of use.

Pressure also matters in the other direction. Firm contact reduces the sensation reaching the surface because the tissue is already compressed. Lighter contact with a layer of lubricant between object and skin usually transmits more, not less, which is covered in the lubricant section.

Four of those five appear on a good product page. The fifth, the character of the lowest setting, almost never does, which is why it is worth asking a retailer directly before ordering.
