Air pulse
These devices sit on the same shelf as vibrators and work on an entirely different principle. Treating one like the other is the usual reason for disappointment.
An air pulse device has a chamber with an opening, and a membrane or piston that moves air inside that chamber. Placed so the opening forms a seal against tissue, the moving air creates alternating pressure: slightly above ambient, then slightly below. Tissue moves in response. Nothing in the device itself needs to vibrate against the skin.
Why the seal is the whole product
Without a seal there is no pressure differential, and the device becomes a quiet fan. That is why position sensitivity is so much higher than with a vibrator, and why the opening size matters more than any other dimension on the listing. Too small and it cannot make contact with the intended area. Too large and it cannot hold pressure.
It also explains why lubricant helps here even though nothing slides. A thin film improves the seal at the rim, which raises the effective intensity without changing any setting.
Sensation and adaptation
Pressure waves reach deeper than surface vibration and adapt more slowly, which is why many people who find vibration numbing get on well with this mechanism. The sensation is often described as suction, although the device does not maintain suction in the way the name suggests. It alternates, and the rate of alternation is what the intensity control changes.
What to check before ordering
- The diameter of the opening, in millimetres, and whether replacement tips are available.
- Whether the head is silicone and removable for cleaning.
- Whether the body is fully sealed or splash resistant, since a chamber traps water.
- The lowest setting, because the range at the quiet end is wide on good designs.
Cleaning deserves particular attention. The chamber is a cavity that holds fluid and is awkward to dry. Designs with a removable head can be rinsed properly; designs without one rely on shaking and patience. The cleaning page covers the sequence that gets a chamber genuinely dry.
Ranges are usually listed under their own heading, which makes them easy to compare against each other rather than against vibrators. A category such as the inWonderstate listing groups them together with the opening dimensions stated per product.
Where it does not fit
An air pulse device is specialised. It does not work as a general purpose object, it cannot be used internally, and it is poor at broad, diffuse stimulation. For anyone who wants one object to do several jobs, a rumbly external vibrator remains the more flexible choice, and the two are frequently owned together rather than as alternatives.
