Wearables

Anything worn against skin for hours is judged by different criteria than something held in the hand for twenty minutes.

Wearable items sit in an odd position in this category. They are sold alongside objects, they are made of related materials, and they are chosen on entirely different grounds. Time is the reason. An object used for twenty minutes forgives a rough seam. A garment worn for eight hours does not.

The three properties that decide

Fibre against skin
How the material handles moisture and how it behaves when it is warm and damp. This decides comfort long before cut does.
Seam placement
A seam under load in the wrong place produces friction, and friction over hours produces the sore patches usually blamed on the body.
Elastic recovery
Whether the garment returns to shape after being stretched. Recovery failing is what makes an old garment feel wrong even though nothing visible has changed.

Heat and moisture

The area covered by underwear is warm, enclosed and frequently damp. Synthetic fibres that hold moisture against skin change the local environment, and for people prone to thrush or bacterial imbalance that change is not theoretical. A breathable panel where it matters solves most of it, which is the entire reason cotton gussets exist in otherwise synthetic garments.

Comfort in a garment is mostly a question of what happens to moisture, and only secondly a question of cut.

Washing

Elastane is the component that fails first in any stretch garment, and it fails from heat. Hot washes, tumble dryers and radiators shorten the life of a garment far more than wearing it does. Cool water, mild detergent and drying flat is the whole instruction, and it roughly doubles the useful life of anything with stretch in it.

Wearable devices add a second cleaning problem, since a motor cannot be washed the way a garment can. The cleaning page covers the separation of parts that makes this manageable.

Buying for hours rather than minutes

The useful test for a wearable item is not how it feels in a changing room but how it feels after four hours of ordinary movement. Sitting, walking and reaching all change where a seam lands, and a garment that is fine standing still can be uncomfortable by the middle of the afternoon.

That is also the argument for owning fewer, better items. Seven or eight pieces that genuinely fit will be worn constantly, while a drawer of twenty bought on appearance usually contains four in regular rotation and sixteen that are quietly avoided.
