Materials

Almost every question about an intimate product turns out to be a question about its material. Feel, safety, cleaning and lifespan all follow from what the thing is made of.

An intimate product is a piece of industrial design that happens to be used against mucous membrane. That single detail changes what matters. A kitchen spatula and a silicone vibrator can be moulded from a similar polymer family, but only one of them is expected to stay clean between uses, tolerate a lubricant, survive boiling water and never leach anything into thin tissue.

Material is therefore the first filter, before shape, before motor, before anything described on the packaging. A shape that does not suit a body can be exchanged. A porous material that has absorbed bacteria cannot be repaired, only thrown away.

The four families

Nearly everything on the market falls into four groups. Platinum cured silicone is soft, non porous and heat tolerant. Hard thermoplastics such as ABS are rigid, non porous and cheap to mould with tight tolerances. Elastomer blends, sold under names like TPE and TPR, are soft and stretchy and almost always porous. Glass and stainless steel are non porous, heavy, entirely rigid and effectively permanent.

Porosity decides the argument

Porosity is the presence of microscopic channels running into the surface. Fluids enter those channels, cleaning agents do not fully reach them, and what remains inside is warm, damp and undisturbed. That is a description of a culture medium. A non porous surface has no such channels, which is why a rinse with soap actually finishes the job rather than smearing it around.

A non porous object can be cleaned. A porous object can only be cleaned on the outside, which is a different claim entirely.

This is the reason the material question is not a matter of taste. Two objects can look identical, feel similar in the hand for the first month, and diverge completely by the sixth. One washes clean each time. The other slowly develops a smell that no amount of scrubbing removes, because the problem is not on the surface.

Reading a label without trusting it

Labels in this category are unusually loose. Body safe is not a defined term. Medical grade has a specific meaning in a hospital supply chain and no meaning at all printed on a box. Hypoallergenic describes an intention rather than a test. The labels page works through the wording that appears most often and what each phrase can and cannot support.

Three practical checks beat any label. Silicone squeaks slightly against itself and does not smell of vanilla or plastic. Porous blends usually carry a faint sweet or chemical odour straight out of the packaging. A material that stains a white cloth when rubbed hard is releasing something, and that something has to go somewhere.
